I was not looking for Nia in 2004. I was perfectly happy clodding my way around a 3-mile track a few times a week and doing power yoga in the gaps. It was my mother who encouraged me to try a class with her. While not interested in her little dancey-dance, I took it as an opportunity to connect with Mom. Helen Terry taught the first class I took. I remember feeling like I was awakening during that class. I moved my body with joy that day, yet still with athleticism. During some of the intense moments in class, Helen said, “Smiling helps.” I laughed out loud and it occurred to me that I’d never laughed while working out. At the end of that class, I remember listening to the sound of my breath and sensing the sweat running from my brow into my eyes and I felt happy. I realized that my spirit craved a deeper connection to my body.
I am almost 59 years old and, for most of my life (up until the age of 55), I have been holding my body out of allignment, as an overrection to injuries, physical and emotional. It began in puberty when I started holding my torso in such a way as to try to conceal my breasts. In doing so, over the course of 30-some years (and along the way adding a shoulder injury and a foot injury) I had thrown my body completely out of allignment.
I would start the day flinging my self through the world, stepping out on the balls of my feet.with my chest pulling me forward. By the end of the day, I was so exhausted and sore that I had to lug my body around, kinked up and in pain. I had danced for most of my life, up until my son was born in 1988, which helped get the kinks out of my body. But after 20 years of not dancing, my body totally kinked.
I was in pain and depressed. I felt that my life was definitely on a downturn toward degeneration and, ultimately, death. Then my daughter invited me me to join her in a Nia class. The first 2 classes were free at the time. There was a substitute teacher that day and she was so warm and welcoming. She literally swept me away into Nia movement. After class, I felt more joy than I had in a very long time. She also taught at another studio which offered 2 free classes. So after 4 Nia classes in 2 weeks, I was completely enthralled with Nia.
No matter what state I was in when I walked into class, I walked out of the class in euphoria. Over the course of the last few years, my sacrum, foot, and shoulder have all moved back into place by way of Nia healings, and I have discovered my core. Joy of movement has replaced the pain and depression in my life. I am so appreciatiative of Nia and all of the wonderfulful teachers whose sharing of themselves has kept me on this path of healing.
